Portage
Creek
Meeting times: 11 am & 5 pm. Special times for
groups can be pre-arranged.
This scenic float offers panoramic views
that you will enjoy while rafting through peaceful Portage Valley.
The trip starts with a visit to the educational Portage Glacier Visitor
Center where nicely done exhibits and displays introduce you to glaciology
and the surrounding Portage Valley. Upon completing your visit to
the Center, you are launched in the raft at the end of Portage Lake with
your guide. Conditions permitting, float within arms-length of icebergs
when they are grounded in the mouth of the river. Into the river’s
mouth you drift, continuing downstream to a nice spot along the river where
you stop and take a break (beverage and cookies provided). Once back
in the raft, the trip continues downstream to where you finally get out.
What is nice about this trip is that you can choose where you get out of
the river, at mile 4.5 or mile 6.5, it’s up to you (people love this option
for small children and other soft adventurers). Our company will
provide you with a ¾ length rain jacket (with hood), rubber boots,
and a life jacket. You wear or bring thick socks (for the boots),
warm clothes, a hat, gloves, binoculars, a camera and lots of film.
Keep a good look out for wildlife … you might see bears, moose, bald eagles,
salmon and waterfowl.
